REAL IDENTITY: one of Europe's finest formal gardens, an Italianate parterre begun in the late 17th century by the 4th Earl of Perth and further developed in the 19th century - the castle itself dates earlier still. ON-SCREEN IDENTITY: portrayed as the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, France, in Season 2 (the 'Not in Scotland Anymore'/'Untimely Resurrection' episodes as Claire and Jamie arrive at King Louis's court). IMPORTANT CURRENT-RELEVANCE CAVEAT: Drummond Castle itself (the building) is NOT open to the public and was never shown as Versailles - only the gardens were filmed, with the grand Versailles palace backdrop added afterwards by CGI. Visitors today see the real, genuinely impressive gardens but no palace building matching what appears on screen - don't oversell a 'Versailles' visual that isn't physically there.

- Gardens only—the castle building is not open. The gardens sit on a steep hillside with several flights of steps; visitors with limited mobility should ask at the ticket office for the alternative lower-garden route. Gravel paths can require a strong wheelchair or buggy pusher.
