Cuthbert withdrew to Inner Farne as a hermit around 676, left reluctantly to become bishop, and returned to die here in 687. St Cuthbert’s Chapel preserves the island’s association with his solitary life. Aidan also appears in Bede’s account of the Farne Islands, giving this remote place links to two generations of Northumbrian Christianity.

- No public/private boats of your own — book with a licensed Seahouses operator; ~15-20 min crossing, then a short uneven path/steps up to St Cuthbert's Chapel; landing trips run c.2.5-3 hours including ~1 hour ashore
