Why this place matters

The single most recognisable Harry Potter filming location in Scotland — the flying Ford Anglia sequence (Chamber of Secrets) and Hogwarts Express viaduct crossings (Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire) were filmed here. Anchors the Lochaber cluster alongside the already-live Rannoch Moor and Steall Falls entries, plus the new Hagrid's Hut and Loch Eilt candidates.

The story on the ground

Built between 1897 and 1901, Glenfinnan Viaduct became one of Scotland’s most recognisable Harry Potter filming locations. It appears in the flying Ford Anglia sequence and in several Hogwarts Express journeys. The viaduct is separate from the nearby Jacobite monument, although the two form a natural visitor cluster.

Before you go

• Use the National Trust for Scotland visitor car park or the adjacent community car park at Glenfinnan, both signposted from the A830. The traffic-free viaduct path starts from the community car park. Train and bus arrival are strongly encouraged.
• No booking needed to view the viaduct. Train times for the passenger ScotRail service and the seasonal steam excursion vary by timetable — check on the day.
• Viewpoints are accessible year-round. Steam excursions are seasonal, while ScotRail services cross the viaduct year-round. Paths may be muddy or slippery and winter daylight is short.
• Glenfinnan Monument visitor and community car parks, A830, Glenfinnan PH37 4LT
• Never stop or park on the A830 roadside. Use only the marked National Trust for Scotland or adjacent community car parks, or arrive by train/bus. Parking can fill quickly. The traffic-free lower path is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs; elevated viewpoints involve steep, uneven or slippery paths. Keep off the working railway.
