The story on the ground

The single most load-bearing site the story is currently missing: this is where Knox preached on 11 June 1559 (following an earlier sermon on 4 June), inflaming the crowd that then sacked the cathedral and religious houses — the exact mechanism the story's Edinburgh-only version glosses over. Locally billed as the 'Cradle of the Reformation in Scotland.' The medieval building has been reordered twice since 1412, so the interior Knox preached in does not survive unaltered — worth a light caveat in visitor copy.

  • Not required for a general visit
  • Open May–Oct, 10am–4pm when volunteer guardians are available; Tue–Fri 10am–12noon (12:45pm Jun–Sep) or by arrangement rest of year. Closed to visitors during the 11:15am Sunday service and other church events, sometimes at short notice.
  • South Street, St Andrews, Fife KY16 9NL, town centre. No church car park; on-street parking only (Fife Council), free on Sundays until 1pm.
