The story on the ground
A different kind of site to the rest of the list: built 1541–44 by a merchant's widow for the Incorporation of Hammermen, it holds the only pre-Reformation stained glass surviving in situ anywhere in Scotland, including the arms of the Catholic Queen Regent Mary of Guise — a rare physical survival of what pre-Reformation religious life actually looked like, which the brief specifically asks for. It is also traditionally said to be where the first General Assembly of the reformed Kirk met on 20 December 1560 — the new Protestant church's own founding governance moment — but sources are explicit this location is 'probably' rather than certainly documented.
