The story on the ground
Founded in 1137, St Magnus Cathedral stands at the centre of medieval Kirkwall and the Norse earldom of Orkney. Its red and yellow sandstone, saints’ relics and long civic life make it one of the clearest surviving monuments to Norse-Christian Scotland.
