STORY SCOTLAND

The story

West Sands

Coastal landscape

Two miles of exposed sand beside the links, used for the opening sequence of Chariots of Fire.

The film story, accurately

Chariots of Fire was filmed here, but the scene is set in Broadstairs, Kent. West Sands was a production location, not the historical setting of the runners' story.

What to look for while you're here

  • The long view south towards the town.
  • The dunes behind the beach and the links alongside.

Before you go

  • Very exposed in wind and poor weather; keep to marked routes through protected dunes.
